Boxer - Martin - Medium - Young - Male - Dog
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Something in Marty's past has made him a bit skeptical of people. What we were told of his history was that he was rescued from a kill shelter in Kentucky. His first foster found him to be un-socialized and wary of men. He was afraid to walk into a house which led his foster to believe he had never been in a house before. Marty has come a very long way in becoming a wonderful house boxer. The first day in our home, he was hesitant to enter the house even though our three resident boxers where bouncing in and out of the doorway. We just let him take his time and within an hour he was leading the pack in and out like he owned the place. He met, interacted and was accepted by our three boxers without any issues. He is loves to run and play in the rough and tumble boxer manner. Lots of noise and body slamming...they all seem to just love it! Marty is not thrilled about going into a dog crate but will follow a tossed treat into it. He does fine in the crate once he is in. Marty has shown no destructive behavior. He loves to go for walks and is fairly mannerly on the leash. He doesn't pull and responds to a tug by stopping. He does know 'sit' but 'down' and 'come' need lots of work. Marty is a bit wary of men but has warmed up very well to my husband after just a few days. Sudden new noises still startle him, but once he has heard the sound a few times, he becomes relaxed with it. At first, any quick movement by us made him jump and scoot away, but within a few days he has relaxed with normal movements around the house. We do not have children in this house so I don't know how he reacts to them. But, a child's quick movements and sounds, may be more than he can handle calmly. Marty was not afraid of the vacuum but wanted to play with it. Marty went to great lengths to meet a cat outside of our yard, but quickly learned that the cat was not as interested in meeting him! He likes to chase wheels, so work is needed on that as well. When a new person enters our home, he is quite vocal, (he has an excellent watchdog bark). We have been working with him to get him to sit and be quiet when meeting new people. Marty's energy level is normal for a 2 to 3 year old boxer. Lots of energy...ready for play and walks. He is calm in the house and has shown no signs of separation anxiety. At this point, I would say the best home for Marty would be a family with lots of dog experience. A family that wants to make him a great part of their life. He will need obedience training and lots of time spent with his people. He is very athletic and I think something like agility would make him happy. Young children would not be good due to their quick movements and sudden sounds. Another resident dog for Marty to look to as a mentor would be great. A home with a fenced yard would also be highly recommended. Marty has shown great progress in the short time he has been in our home, and I believe will become a great companion to the family who will take the time to help him. He just needs time and understanding to grow to his full potential. P. S. With Martin, you get a bit more boxer...he comes with a full length tail!
